We are seeking an experienced State & Local Tax (SALT) Partner to lead and grow our California SALT practice. This role is responsible for providing strategic SALT advisory services, overseeing complex multistate tax matters, developing client relationships, and driving practice growth. The SALT Partner will serve as a trusted advisor to middle-market, multinational, and private-equity-backed clients across a broad range of industries, with a strong emphasis on California taxation.
Key Responsibilities
Client Advisory & Technical Leadership
- Serve as lead SALT advisor for complex multistate clients, including public and private companies
- Provide technical leadership on:
- California and multistate income/franchise tax
- Sales and use tax, gross receipts, and local taxes
- Nexus, apportionment, and sourcing
- Pass-through entity (PTE) tax regimes and elective taxes
- ASC 740 (income tax provision) SALT components
- Lead SALT aspects of M&A transactions, including:
- Due diligence
- Structuring and post-transaction integration
- Advise clients on audit defense, controversy, and voluntary disclosure programs
- Stay at the forefront of California legislative and regulatory changes and assess client impact
Practice Leadership & Growth
- Build, lead, and expand the California SALT practice
- Develop and execute strategic growth initiatives
- Drive new business through personal book of business and cross-selling with audit and tax partners
- Lead client proposals, pricing, and engagement economics
- Collaborate with firm leadership to enhance SALT service offerings and market positioning
People Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop SALT Directors, Managers, Seniors, and Associates
- Establish technical training and knowledge-sharing programs
- Promote a collaborative, high-performance culture focused on quality and client service
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s in Taxation preferred)
- Active CPA license required (JD and/or LLM in Taxation strongly preferred)
- 15+ years of progressive SALT experience in public accounting or consulting
- Deep expertise in California SALT, including income/franchise and sales/use tax
- Proven success managing large, complex multistate engagements
- Demonstrated ability to develop and grow a book of business
- Strong leadership, communication, and executive-level client advisory skills
