Position Summary
The Director of Accounting & Financial Reporting will lead the accounting function for a growing real estate property management organization, overseeing financial reporting, technical accounting, and internal controls across a diversified real estate portfolio. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant financial statements while partnering closely with asset management, operations, and executive leadership to support strategic decision-making.
The ideal candidate brings deep real estate accounting expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and experience managing complex property structures, consolidations, and reporting requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Close
- Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process for property-level and consolidated entities
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of GAAP-compliant financial statements
- Manage consolidated reporting across multiple legal entities and ownership structures
- Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial schedules
Real Estate Accounting Oversight
- Lead accounting for operating properties, including revenue recognition, CAM reconciliations, accruals, and lease accounting
- Oversee accounting for acquisitions, dispositions, capital projects, and development activity
- Ensure proper accounting treatment for debt, equity, joint ventures, and waterfalls
- Partner with asset management on budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
Technical Accounting & Policy
- Serve as the technical accounting expert for the organization
- Research and implement new accounting standards (e.g., ASC 842, ASC 606 as applicable)
- Develop, document, and maintain accounting policies and procedures
- Ensure consistent application of accounting practices across the portfolio
Internal Controls, Audit & Compliance
- Design, implement, and maintain strong internal controls over financial reporting
- Manage external audit process, including preparation of audit schedules and coordination with auditors
- Ensure compliance with lender reporting requirements and investor reporting obligations
- Support tax compliance efforts in coordination with internal and external tax advisors
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and financial reporting team
- Establish performance expectations and drive a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
- Evaluate staffing needs and support hiring and onboarding as the organization grows
Systems & Process Improvement
- Oversee accounting systems and property management platforms (e.g., Yardi, MRI, AppFolio)
- Drive process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
- Partner with IT and finance leadership on system implementations and enhancements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles
- Significant experience in real estate accounting or property management
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements
- Proven experience managing audits and complex consolidations
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA designation strongly preferred
- Public accounting background (Big 4 or national firm) combined with industry experience
- Experience with multi-entity real estate portfolios and joint venture accounting
- Familiarity with private equity, institutional investors, or lender reporting
