We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Controller to oversee the financial operations of a senior living community. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the facility’s financial reporting while partnering closely with the Executive Director, corporate finance team, department leaders, and operational staff. The ideal candidate will have strong accounting and financial management experience, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. Experience in senior living, healthcare, skilled nursing, assisted living, long-term care, hospitality, or another multi-department operating environment is highly valued.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, cash management, and payroll coordination.
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements, management reports, and financial analyses.
- Ensure financial records are accurate, complete, and maintained in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
- Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, resident receivables, and other key accounts.
- Monitor and analyze revenue, expenses, cash flow, and working capital.
- Identify financial discrepancies and implement corrective actions when necessary.
Senior Living / Resident Accounting
- Oversee resident billing, collections, deposits, and account reconciliations.
- Monitor accounts receivable aging and work with operational teams to improve collections and reduce outstanding balances.
- Ensure accurate accounting for resident fees, ancillary services, deposits, and other community revenue.
- Partner with admissions and administrative teams to ensure timely and accurate billing information.
- Assist with payer-related accounting and reporting, including Medicare, Medicaid, private pay, or other applicable reimbursement streams, as appropriate to the facility.
Budgeting & Financial Analysis
- Assist with the preparation and management of the annual operating budget.
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to leadership to support operational decision-making.
- Analyze budget-to-actual results and investigate significant variances.
- Develop financial forecasts and provide recommendations to improve profitability and cash flow.
- Partner with department heads to monitor labor costs, supplies, occupancy, revenue, and other key performance indicators.
- Provide management with meaningful financial insights rather than simply reporting the numbers.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Establish and maintain effective internal controls over financial transactions and reporting.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate internal and external audits and provide requested documentation.
- Maintain appropriate supporting documentation for financial transactions and account reconciliations.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen processes, reduce risk, and improve financial controls.
Leadership & Operations
- Supervise and develop accounting staff and establish clear expectations for the finance function.
- Serve as a financial business partner to the Executive Director and senior leadership team.
- Collaborate with operations, human resources, dining, nursing, admissions, facilities, and other departments.
- Provide financial guidance and support for operational initiatives and special projects.
- Improve accounting processes, reporting procedures, and financial systems to increase efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in senior living, healthcare, skilled nursing, assisted living, long-term care, hospitality, or a similar environment.
- Previous Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or senior-level accounting experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Experience with month-end close, account reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Strong understanding of accounts receivable, collections, accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger accounting.
- Excellent Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
- Experience with accounting/ERP systems and financial reporting software.
- CPA or other professional accounting designation is a plus.
