Position Overview
The Accounting Advisory Controller will serve as a senior technical accounting expert and operational leader supporting clients through complex accounting matters, process improvements, and financial operations oversight. This role combines controllership experience with advisory services, delivering both hands-on accounting leadership and strategic guidance. The ideal candidate holds a CPA, has deep technical accounting knowledge (US GAAP), and is comfortable working in dynamic, project-based environments.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Accounting & Advisory
- Advise clients on complex accounting matters, including revenue recognition, lease accounting, equity transactions, business combinations, and consolidations.
- Prepare or review technical accounting memos, position papers, and supporting documentation.
- Provide guidance on new accounting standards and ensure compliance with US GAAP and relevant regulatory requirements.
Controllership & Financial Operations
- Oversee or step in as interim controller for clients to manage month-end close, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Ensure timely and accurate financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Design and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to enhance operational efficiency and reliability.
Reporting & Compliance
- Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Support audit readiness, manage auditor relationships, and oversee year-end audit processes.
- Maintain compliance with tax, regulatory, and industry reporting requirements.
Process Improvement & Systems
- Assess current accounting processes and recommend improvements to enhance accuracy, speed, and scalability.
- Provide oversight or support for ERP implementations, system upgrades, and automation initiatives.
- Develop financial dashboards, analytics, and enhanced reporting tools for clients.
Client Leadership & Project Management
- Manage multiple client engagements simultaneously, ensuring high-quality deliverables and strong client relationships.
- Lead cross-functional discussions to align accounting outcomes with strategic business objectives.
- Collaborate with advisory and technical teams to support growth initiatives and thought leadership.
Qualifications
- Active CPA required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- 8–12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting (Big 4 or mid-tier preferred) and industry controllership experience.
- Strong understanding of US GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting requirements.
- Demonstrated success in advisory roles, project-based work, or interim leadership assignments.
- Experience with ERP systems such as NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, QuickBooks Enterprise, or similar.
- Excellent communication, client-management, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Experience
- Background in fast-growing or PE-backed companies.
- Experience reviewing or preparing SEC filings (10-K, 10-Q), though not required.
- Familiarity with M&A accounting, purchase price allocation, and integration.
